Born in Ireland, Eileen Gray studied drawing and the technique of oriental lacquer in London and Paris where she exhibited her works for the first time in 1913. Surrounded by members of the "Union des Artistes Modernes" such as Pierre Chareau and Rene Herbst, her work was noticed by the architects Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier and Mallet-Stevens. In 1924, encouraged by the architect founder of the magazine "Architecture Vivante", Jean Badovici, Eileen Gray undertook studies in architecture which resulted in the creation of the house E-1027 at Roquebrune. Her life's work is distinguished by luxurious and meticulously finished objects in rigorously functional style.
